How it works

Each grade converts to grade points (A = 4.0 down to F = 0). Multiply each course's points by its credit hours, add them all up, then divide by total credit hours. Heavier courses pull your GPA more — that's why credits matter.

Formula & worked example

Formula: GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours, with A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.

Worked example: An A in a 3-credit course, a B in a 4-credit course and an A in another 3-credit course: (12 + 12 + 12) ÷ 10 credits = a 3.6 GPA.

Frequently asked questions

Weighted vs unweighted GPA — what's the difference?

Unweighted caps at 4.0 for every class. Weighted gives honors/AP/IB classes extra points (often up to 5.0) to reward harder coursework. This calculator is unweighted.

Does retaking a class replace the old grade?

Depends on your school — many replace the old grade in GPA math, some average the two attempts. Check your school's policy, then enter the courses the way your school counts them.

What GPA do I need?

Most colleges look for 3.0+, competitive programs often want 3.5+. Scholarships and graduate programs each set their own bar — always check the specific requirement.
