Test Grade Calculator

The end-of-term question: what do I need on the final? Weighted mode answers it from your current grade, the final’s weight and your target — and tells you plainly when the target is impossible or already safe. Points mode handles classes graded on raw totals.

Check your syllabus: “final = 30% of grade” means weighted; “1,000 points total” means points.
The needed score can exceed 100 — that is the calculator telling you the target is out of reach, not an error.

How it works

Weighted mode solves one equation: current × (1 − weight) + needed × weight = target, rearranged to needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. Points mode compares totals: the target needs target% × (points so far + final points), minus what you have already banked. A need above the maximum is impossible; a need at or below zero is already secured — both are real answers worth knowing before you study.

Assumes the final is the only remaining grade and no curve, drop-lowest or extra credit applies unless your syllabus says so — those can only help beyond what is shown here.

Formula & worked example

Formula: Weighted mode solves current × (1 − weight) + needed × weight = target for the unknown: needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. Points mode: points needed = target % × (points so far + final points) − points already earned. A need above the maximum is impossible; a need at or below zero is already secured.

Worked example: With an 85% current grade and a final worth 30%: a 90 target needs 101.67% — impossible; the best possible finish is 89.5%. An 80 target needs 68.33%. In points mode, 450 of 500 points banked with a 200-point final and a 90% target needs 180 of the 200 points.

Frequently asked questions

I have an 85 and the final is worth 30%. What do I need for a 90?

A 101.7 — impossible. Your current work contributes 85 × 70% = 59.5 of the 90, leaving 30.5 to come from a final worth only 30. The realistic ceiling is an 89.5. Knowing that in week 14 beats learning it at the grade posting.

Same class — what do I need to hold an 80?

A 68.3 on the final. The drop from “impossible” to “very doable” between targets 90 and 80 is the leverage of the 70% you have already banked.

How does points mode work?

Say you have 450 of 500 points (90%) and the final is worth 200: the class total becomes 700, a 90% target needs 630 points, so you must score 180 of 200 on the final — a 90.0%. Points mode needs no percentages until the very end, which is why syllabi that use it feel fairer.

What does “already secured” mean?

Your banked work alone clears the target even with a zero on the final. It does not mean skip the exam — a zero may still fail an attendance or minimum-score rule — it means the letter grade arithmetic is already done.
